Craigslist ads came from everywhere but Seattle – a surprise since that’s where I was looking.
For this evaluation I searched Jobster for sales jobs, posted during a 24hr window, within 50 miles of Seattle – see Craigslist Degrades Vertical Job Search for the details.
Of the top 200 job ads returned, 75 came from Craigslist; but not one came from the Seattle Craigslist site. Perhaps the jobs from the Seattle site were below my cutoff point of 200 jobs – effectively hidden by all of the duplicates in the sample. Or maybe Jobster wasn’t indexing the Seattle site.
But the fact is, the 75 CL jobs – for sales in Seattle – came from the following Craigslist sites:
Albuquerque 2
Atlanta 1
Austin 3
Chicago 1
Cincinnati 2
Cleveland 1
Columbia 2
Columbus 2
Dallas 10
Dayton 2
Denver 10
Des Moines 3
Detroit 4
El Paso 1
Fort Meyers 1
Fresno 1
Grand Rapids 1
Greensboro 2
Hartford 2
Hawaii 5
Houston 10
Indianapolis 3
Inland Empire 2
Jackson 3
Jacksonville 1
Not one of the ads from the above sites specifically referenced working in the Seattle area. Most referenced working from home, anywhere in the US; but 7 of the 75 ads did specify a physical work location outside the State of Washington.
Notice that none of the ads originated in San Francisco, Los Angeles or New York City – the three locations where CL currently charges for job ads.
Bottom line – none of the 75 Craigslist ads were specific to Seattle; all were placed in locations where listings are free; and most were of questionable intent.
Which leads us to part IV – Job Search and Blind Dates – in the Craigslist Degrades Vertical Job Search series.
Good sleuthing there sir, I appreciate your research.
