SimplyHired wants to be number one. And when a firm is serious about being the best, they never settle for less. So when I rated SimplyHired 3rd Best Site for Active Job Search, it didn’t sit well. They could have complained; or they could have challenged the rating. They did neither. Instead, SimplyHired continued executing their plan, confident that if the rest of us didn’t see that they were number one at that point, we would soon.
So two weeks ago, when I published that SimplyHired was 3rd best, they had 4.4 million jobs. Today, as indicated in the image at right, they have 5.4 million jobs – more than a 20% increase in coverage.
According to Dave McClure, VP Evangelism at SimplyHired, “…as we work our way down the data sources for the "long tail of jobs", i'd imagine we can increase it even further. anyway, that's the goal... keep expanding the coverage & keep increasing the # of jobs we help people find/discover.”
Since the gap between 3rd and 1st was about 10% in the previous comparison, there’s a good chance that SimplyHired leapfrogged into the lead. But, word from their competitors is that they too are expanding coverage … so another comparison seems in the offing. Bottom line, if you’re a jobseeker, you win!
Increasing coverage (jobs available) from 4.4 million to 5.4 million from the so-labelled "long tail of jobs" is impressive. However, quantity mustn't be equated with quality. If the goal is to increase coverage with nominal regard for search result (matching jobs) relevance - stakeholders lose.
