34,321 jobs match my criteria – that’s what I found yesterday (see Job Search Optimization – Advanced Search) while using advanced search techniques to look for Web Developer positions in New York City.
Reviewing the first few hundred results (no small task) indicates that the relevance of the results drop significantly after the first hundred. But why do I have to ‘eyeball’ this? Why is it that none of the major job sites (Indeed, SimplyHired, Jobster, CareerBuilder, Monster, HotJobs, GoogleBase, or Craigslist) provide relevance scores for each job search? How hard could this be? Realtor.com provides an example that the job boards could follow.
Wouldn’t it be great to look at a page of job search results and see that the first three jobs are a good fit; and that the remaining jobs are not nearly as relevant? I sure think so. And if we had relevance scores, we could use them as another filter to limit the jobs that are sent to us automatically via RSS or email.
So who will be first to add relevance scores to their match results? Given the history of innovation, or lack thereof at some sites, my money is on Indeed or SimplyHired.
What do you think? Would search relevance scores improve your job search experience? Let me know. The job boards are watching.
