Ready, set, go green!

 

This week we’re putting the finishing touches on our Green Job Extractor v1.0. 

 

You may well be asking, ‘what’s it do?’, and ‘why should I care?’

 

Well, if you received a ‘Green LMI’ grant from ETA, then you already know that ETA is funding States to “collect, analyze, and disseminate labor market information, and to enhance the labor exchange infrastructure for careers within the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries.”

 

Key to delivering Green LMI, and enhancing the labor exchange for Green Jobs, is the ability to identify green opportunities within the economy.  This is where the Green Job Extractor (GJE) helps.

 

In much the same way that O*NET-SOC AutoCoder assigns O*NET codes to jobs, GJE assigns ‘Green Levels’ and ‘Green Scores’ using a combination of the following inputs:

 

 -   Job Title

-   Job Description

-   Job Category

-   Firm/Advertiser

-   O*NET 14 Code

-   O*NET 14 Fit Score

-   NAICS Code

-   NAICS Fit Score

-   Green Override Level

-   Green Trust Score

Since the definition of a ‘Green Job’ is still evolving, GJE provides extensive options for State customization.  The default configuration for GJE assigns one of six ‘Green Level’s’ to each ad; ranging from ‘Dark Green’ to ‘Anti-Green’.  But with GJE, you are in control of the number of assigned levels, plus a host of additional configuration settings.  So GJE will support your research as well a providing a tool that is ready to work right out of the box.

O*NET-SOC AutoCoder v7 vs OccuCoder v1 License Comparison

 

What do you want to do with your occupational coding software?  A big limiting factor is the license agreement.

 

With the release of OccuCoder, ETA has developed a new license agreement that is a model of clarity and simplicity.  I wish every license agreement was this easy to read and understand.

 

RMWC’s O*NET-SOC AutoCoder v7 license agreement isn’t nearly as easy to read; but it does allow you to do more with your software.

 

A State licensing from us can use the software for almost any State program (federally supported or not); whereas OccuCoder is limited to federal purposes.

 

Our licenses never expire … so you can keep using the software even if you don’t renew support.  In contrast, ETA’s license says that “As a condition of this license, the State agrees that it will pay its annual share of separately agreed-upon costs related to the maintenance and upkeep of OccuCoder.”

 

And if you want to modify the application, you can do it with our software, but not OccuCoder.

 

Finally, since we’re the developer, retailer and the support vendor for our software, we include money-back guarantees for accuracy and satisfaction in our standard license agreement.  ETA provides no guarantees whatsoever.

 

So no matter what you want to do with your occupational coding software, it’s a good bet that RMWC AutoCoder will let you do what you want.

 

OccuCoder ver1.0 Now Available

 

Per the UI ITSC site, OccuCoder, ITSC’s new occupational coding software is now available to states.

 

Why blog about it here?  Well, I’d like to expand on a few points made on the ITSC site.

 

First, the ITSC site states that “OccuCoder replaces AutoCoder ITSC’s legacy occupational coding software application.”  Yes, ITSC’s AutoCoder was indeed a legacy application; but please don’t confuse ITSC’s AutoCoder v2.x application with RMWC’s O*NET-SOC AutoCoder v7.x. Our v7 software is the most advanced occupational coder on the market.

 

Second, the ITSC site states that “…AutoCoder software application is no longer available to states.”  While ITSC’s legacy v2.x software is no longer available; RMWC’s v7 software certainly remains available to States.

 

Third, although the ITSC site says that “ITSC has just completed development of OccuCoder the next generation of automated occupational coding”; the reference applies to the ‘next generation’ of ITSC software.  However, the new OccuCoder system still lags behind RMWC AutoCoder v7.0 in many areas, including: a) coding of Spanish titles; b) tuning to reflect each State’s occupational distribution; c) simultaneous support for multiple taxonomies; d) license flexibility (more on this in a future post); e) track record of stable high-volume performance in public and private installations; and, f) money-back satisfaction and accuracy guarantees.

 

Wrapping up, I’d like to tell you that we’re still more accurate; but so far, the ITSC has tightly restricted access to OccuCoder … thus, we’ve been unable to do any comparison testing.  So if you are thinking about licensing an occupational coding solution, I certainly recommend that you conduct your own accuracy test.  After all, there really isn’t much point paying for an occupational coder if the accuracy is an unknown.

 

Speaking of ‘paying’ … with the release of OccuCoder, the ITSC has reduced their annual support fee to $7k … less than half of their previous price for AutoCoder support. This is a good deal if the product meets your needs.
